No escaping that safety comes first

Every month we showcase one of the different and more obscure pieces of work we do at Gritblasting UK. One of the projects completed this month is the blast cleaning and recoating of an industrial building's fire escape for our client.

This spiral fire escape, a vital part of the building, is showing its age. The close up shot shows the extent of the existing paint deterioration and the onset of surface rust.

We grit-blasted this fire escape, removing all the surface contaminants and existing paint layers. It was then recoated with a Cromadex one coat paint system to protect it.

As you can see, the end result is a clean, rust free protected surface. It is recommended that fire escapes are painted every five years.

Grit blasting is where abrasive particles are accelerated and forcefully directed against a surface. In this case, the media used is grit. The high-speed abrasive particles remove contaminants from the surface and condition the surface in readiness for new paint coverings. The impact of the grit on a metal surface puts the surface layer into compression, and this effect can reduce stress corrosion cracking in some metals.
