Portsmouth International Passenger Terminal - Floor preparation project

Updated: Oct 31, 2023

There is a multi-million pound extension of Portsmouth port’s passenger terminal currently underway to accommodate the increased demand in the cruise market.

Following the successful completion of the cruise berth extension in 2021, the port is committed to creating additional capacity to manage an additional 250,000 passengers a year, above its current two million. The new facility will be cutting-edge in environmental development, to complement the current terminal building and the port’s net zero ambitions.

Grit Blasting UK was contracted to remove the surface layer of laitance and provide a key to around 700 m2 of concrete flooring. We did this by captive blasting, with power being supplied by our specialist generator.

This work allowed the surface to be primed by the contractor, ready to apply a levelling compound. This is prior to an epoxy coating being applied.

The pictures show the project in progress.

Captive blasting is used to remove surface coatings, providing a perfect key for new coatings to be applied. This is a dust-free method of surface preparation, that efficiently exposes the fresh surface.

Grit Blasting UK provides surface preparation solutions, and is the UK's leading specialist contractor for concrete floor preparation. We operate across the UK, with our base in Wiltshire.
